2008 SESSION

Please check out our entire web site; however, the following questions seem to be frequently asked.

What is the purpose of Missouri Girls State?
The purpose is to promote pride in America and to create a mythical state that the citizens will govern at the city, county and state level.  We will have speakers who serve as leaders in our Missouri government as well as hold important offices in our communities.

What will Missouri Girls State cost?
MGS is a well-known program of the American Legion Auxiliary.  The staff is 98% volunteer, most are members of the ALA or are former Girls State citizens.  The $225 tuition is paid by the auxiliary unit sponsoring the citizen, a sending school or a contributing organization who has provided the tuition fee.   Each delegate brings some spending money for souvenirs, snacks and other essentials throughout the week.

What if my daughter decides not to go?
If she is the delegate and has received the official notification letter; we need to be notified immediately.  We can notify an alternate who is “waiting in the wings” for the opportunity to go.  If someone does not tell us and “just doesn’t show up”, the auxiliary unit or the contributing organization forfeits the $225.  The auxiliary unit, contributing organization and the high school, as a courtesy, will be informed of the unfortunate turn of events.

Has anyone ever been that inconsiderate?
Unfortunately, yes!

How do I contact my daughter while she is at Girls State?
Everybody loves to get mail!  You may write to the following address:
Her Name
Missouri Girls State or MGS
________ City, _____ County
UCM
Warrensburg, MO 64093
She may also bring a cell phone but can not take it outside of Ellis Hall dorm.  If she has voice mail set up on her cell phone, she can return your call upon return to the dorm.

Is there an emergency phone number at the university?
We have several numbers for you to call depending upon the time of day:
MGS Director’s Desk (7:30 a.m. – 11:30 p.m.)  660-543-4500
UCM Public Safety Office (11:30 p.m. – 7:30 a.m.) 660-543-4123

What if my daughter gets sick or hurt at MGS?
She will be given prompt medical attention.  A doctor’s signature on the medical form allows our staff nurses to dispense “over the counter” medication such as aspirin, Tylenol, cough drops, sore throat lozenges, etc.  The Infirmary at MGS is in room N105 immediately off main floor lobby.  If it is determined she needs emergency medical care and needs to be seen by a doctor, she will be taken to the Western Missouri Medical Center,
403 Burkarth Road, 660-747-2500.  You will be called immediately.

Will my daughter be supervised the entire week?
Yes, your daughter will be assigned to a group of approximately 36 girls with a “City” name and each city has a counselor and an assistant counselor.  We also have other staff members who assist with Girls State who help in supervising and guiding the girls throughout the week.  In addition, we have 2 MO Highway Patrolmen on staff as security and serve as instructors in our Law Enforcement class.

How will I know what my daughter will be doing during the week?
You are welcome to download the week’s schedule.  We will also update the web site’s “2008 Session” frequently during the week, listing elected offices, highlighting the days’ activities and include pictures of “government in action”.
