State Treasurer: Scott Fitzpatrick

Written by: Delaney Thompson

Scott Fitzpatrick, Missouri's 47th State Treasurer, made an appearance as a guest speaker during the 2021 Missouri Girls State Session. Fitzpatrick began introducing a little bit about himself and how he got where he is today. During his high school years, Fitzpatrick opened his own business working on docks in his hometown. When he began attended college classes, he noticed that's when he started paying attention to politics and the effects the government has on our lives.

Because of the frustrating personal issues he had with the state government, he decided to run for the House of Representatives at the age of 24. Fitzpatrick experienced discouragement from others during the election because of his young age. This did not stop him. Fitzpatrick won the primary election at the age of 25 in 2012. He then became the Budget Committee Chairman. This committee focuses on statewide tax money and analyzes how it should be spent. In 2019, Fitzpatrick was appointed as the State treasurer by the Governor. In this position, he worked well on returning 1 million dollars of unclaimed property tax to Missourians across the state.

Overall, Scott Fitzpatrick provided MGS delegates with the advice to work hard and not to be afraid to ask questions. One of his closing statements was to "always be ready to take opportunities that present themselves."
